About me

I’ve always loved to draw and paint.  It was nearly impossible to stop me.  Luckily my Grandmother Kelly and Aunt Mimi inspired me to play with materials and mediums, using my own imagination for the subject matter.  I still cherish one of my Grandmother’s books that she had used as a teaching aid for art, and turn to it quite often for inspiration.

I have a graphic style to my painting, using heavily saturated colors in an illustrative manner. Inspired by posters and book illustrations from the early 1900’s, I have developed a personal style of art based on my love of arts and crafts and historical imagery. I’ve painted and produced art for calendars and cards, and custom designed jewelry.

I work with watercolor and gouache on paper, and with oil paint on canvas.  I like both mediums and the colors/blending styles unique to each.  Some of the art I produce digitally, using a stylus, photoshop and the iPad creating a “digital” woodcut style. While the final product isn’t canvas or paper, it can be printed  either as limited edition prints, cards or calendars.

I mostly work from my minds eye, recalling a scene that made me stop and study it, or gasp with delight at the beauty of nature.  I do take multitudes of photographs, and if I’m painting a specific animal or scene I will use them for reference.  I think of my paintings as life illustrations, somewhere between the real world and fantasy.

Thanks for looking at my artwork,

Sara Kelly
